Their Story

Barrera’s Draperies Plus, a family-owned and operated workroom had its humble beginning in the living room of the Barrera family in 1979.  The Founder and Principal, Lucy Barrera, had learned how to sew since she was a child, taught by her mother and, years later, by her mother-in-law (a skilled seamstress who loved to sew everything from clothing to draperies). Lucy grew up practicing her sewing every chance she got and for years had a dream that someday she would have the joy of serving others through her sewing skills, especially creating custom furnishings for their homes. Her late husband, Sergio, encouraged her to pursue that dream and offered his support in making it a reality.  And she did just that. One day, Lucy decided to purchase a couple of industrial sewing machines, while her husband built a large working table for her and set it in the family living room.  Lucy then began offering her services to interior designers, architects and decorators.  She enlisted the help of her children, Edith and Sergio (both children grew up working in the family business), who spent many hours doing everything from sewing to filling pillows for clients.  Soon, Barrera’s Draperies Plus was serving all clients in Houston and surrounding areas, and people loved the custom products created in the workroom so much that the business began to grow more year after year; so more equipment was needed and more space. The garage was then converted into the workroom, and all operations were moved from the living room to the new workroom space, where they continued for a few years. Eventually, though, business outgrew even the new space, and a new building was designed by Edith, who was now an interior designer, and built on Dunlavy St., in the heart of Montrose, near downtown Houston (the current shop location).  Today, the Barrera family team continues to work together doing what they all love to do – enriching the quality of people’s lives through the custom products designed and created in the workroom. Each new client they serve becomes part of this cherished family story.
